Sooooo… Turns out, holding down two part time teaching jobs AND freelancing while running a business is not very effective!
I have said goodbye to one of the teaching jobs and have become more empowered with the use of the word ‘no’ when it comes to freelance opportunities. In other news, I have stopped using the phrase “I am trying to run a business”… I say “I am leading a craft based business.” “Do or do not, there is no try” yes - my nerd is showing I am quoting Yoda. For a long time I have been positioning Deco 22 as a Fashion Brand. I have freelanced as a pattern cutter at numerous fashion brands and can clearly see that these companies have teams of people working on different aspects of the business - design development, mass production, promotion and sales, to name just a few. I do not have a team of people, occasionally I employ freelancers , but the majority of the time it is all me .. design, production, branding, photography, editing, website updates (?!), marketing, social media - I do it all. My focus has always been on the craft and producing limited edition pieces. It amazes me that despite knowing this it has taken me years to realize that a fashion brand was the wrong business model for Deco 22. Perhaps subconsciously I knew - which is why I have struggled with a clear vision of how to promote and sell my work. Now I finally understand what Deco 22 is, it is time to begin. So… Deco 22 is a craft-based label led by designer maker Jasmine Carey. The label creates a sleek and anti-traditional elegance through the design and creation of products paying homage to the simple, clean shapes of the Art Deco and Streamline Modern periods. At the heart of Deco 22 is a desire to celebrate fine craftsmanship, creating quality pieces that are not for a season, but for many years to come. Roll on 2018.
