My Second Iron

I purchased my second iron (above), direct from the Norris Steam showroom in east London. I try to avoid buying things online, especially ‘my preciouses’. Due to limited studio space I use an ordinary iron board.

I actually bought this machine because it was pwetty  - and a TENNER! I found it amongst the bric brac in the second hand bit at Deptford market (one of my favourite places). Turns out it was something I could actually USE - it works well with leather. I am still learning to use this one. I am so used to pedal power it feels a bit weird using only my hands to move it.

I recently found a video on how to thread it on Pinterest.

Tailors ham and Pressing mitts

I made my Tailors ham, (see making a tailors ham blog).

My pressing mitts were made for me by my adopted work Uncle :-), a machinist I met while freelancing back in 2006. ( thank you Uncle Jaynal)

Sleeve board

On my way to the studio one day, I took a wander by the second hand market stalls in Deptford. ( yes I go there a lot )And found this sleeve board.

I removed the cover using it as a pattern template, and recovered the board.

I cut a new cover in calico, encased elastic around the edges that can be pulled tighter.
Tada! my new sleeve board :-)

So there you have it!! These are some of the items I use in my studio. They were bought brand new, second hand or were handmade by me. I had previous experience of using each item I purchased BEFORE I bought them. I find that buying direct from suppliers, with a chance to talk to the seller, face to face works best for me.

I hope you found this information useful?

If you plan to come to Cockpit Arts Deptford Spring open studios, pop into studio 209 and say hello.

Hi Jasmine, I am on the hunt for a good steam generator iron, and I came across the Stirovap 303. If its not too much trouble, can you tell me what your experience has been with it so far? I am a hobby dressmaker, but I understand the importance of having a good pressing set up. Like you, I do not have space for the vacuum ironing board, so, has not having one affected the performance of the iron? Cheers, Dibs

Hi Dibs.
So far I have been very happy with my Iron. As I said in the Blog I had used this Iron before as a lot of the companies I freelance for use it. It does take longer to heat up than regular iron but you can use it for hours without refilling the water tank. I use it on mainly tailored fabrics, and occasionally on light weight cloths. I am always happy with the finish. I hope this was helpful.
