With advice from my Mum who used to be a machinist, I visited my local Singer shop (long gone now), on Lewisham high street.
After deliberation and armed with funds from my lovely Dad, I chose a ‘Singer Samba 6’. Twenty-eight years later, I STILL have the same machine, it’s my back-up when I have the urge to sew at home.

Try your best to buy your sewing machine from somewhere that will allow you to try using the machine in store. I am a big fan of local machine shops, not only will they let you try any machine you plan on purchasing, the sales people are often the professionals who service and repair machines and have a wealth of knowledge about the machines they sell and work with.
