During a recent evening teaching session, I watched the growing frustration of some of my students as they worked on individual projects. There were deep breaths as they unpicked mistakes, so focused on what they hadn’t done and what had not worked, rather than acknowledgment of what they had achieved and how far they had come. This student group were relatively new to sewing; each one had chosen a challenging project knowing they had me there for guidance. They were doing really well, (biased? Me? Never!) but they were unhappy because in their minds they were not progressing on their projects as quickly as they should.
It was interesting to observe their frustration, as personally I often focus on what I want to achieve and often forget to acknowledge what I have done. How many of us are guilty of the same?

I think back to when I first moved into studio space at Cockpit Arts. I tried years earlier and was rejected, then my business manager at LYST encouraged me to re-apply. The picture below was taken at my first open studios in December 2011.
…and this one was taken in December 2014.
Hmmm.. Ok, so progress is definitely happening - yeah!!!
So before beating yourself up for not being where you want to be, remember where you began.
